After having shot in Seville, Madrid and Rome, Colombian director Sergio Dow is now ready for the imminent premiere on October 21 of the feature film 'La piel del tambor', a film based on the novel of the same name by Arturo Perez­ Reverte. The film has an international cast led by actors such as Amaia Salamanca, Richard Armitage, Paul Freeman, Franco Nero, Jorge Sanz, Rodolfo Sancho and Alicia Borrachero, among others.

This filmmaker comments that “making films where the industry is not very established is very complicated. In the case of Colombia, film production has been somewhat intermittent. In Spain there has always been a production, oscillating between years in which more is produced and others less”. To this he adds that “in order to survive at work you have to do many things. I wish it was thanks to making films or documentaries, which I have done many. But much of my life I have defended myself directing commercials”.

Says Dow that “developing a project like this independently and outside of a studio is difficult because making a movie is a very money-intensive undertaking. In this case we have had Enrique Cerezo, who is one of the producers who knows the industry best. He is the dean of Spanish producers. He has a filmography that no other producer has and he is a man passionate about cinema. He has recovered most of the Spanish films and has restored them. It is a legacy that will not be repeated. It is the only legacy of that size that is going to be made to the memory of the Spanish. 9,500 restored Spanish films. In other words, he has a mission that no one else but him could have done. Thanks to his passion and dedication, he has achieved all this”.

A for the development of the “La piel del tambor” project, once it was produced by Cerezo, “the first thing we did was write a script, a laborious and long phase. In addition, you have to get the resources. A movie like this demands a pretty big investment. In this case we have had about six million euros, more or less. This, compared to the budgets that are handled in other places like Hollywood, is a medium budget, even for Spain, where larger productions are made, but for us it was a comfortable amount and adequate for what we wanted to do.

Regarding why he felt fascinated by Perez-Reverte's novel, Sergio Dow acknowledges that “when I read it I realized that it was a narrative that had a cinematographic vocation. It is a voluminous novel where there are reflections, disquisitions and all kinds of things, but I found the essence, the story. I was interested in the themes that Arturo raises recurrently through his work. Once I had that figured out, I left the project for a while until the right time to make this movie presented itself”.

The first thing Dow had to do was secure the rights to the novel. "That was not easy because I live in the United States. Arturo has his agents in Hollywood and New York and it was necessary to start by clarifying if the rights were available. I spoke with Raquel de la Concha, who is Arturo's agent and with whom I have a friendship at the moment from this negotiation. She told me that the rights had been compromised, but that had already expired. Tried to do a series. I saw some episodes that I think had merit, but the thing was no more.

The next step that Dow took was the adaptation of a voluminous novel of almost 500 pages in its English version – “The Seville Communion”, – translated by Sonia Soto. «One of the conditions that we agreed with Arturo and his agents was that the film had to be shot in English. That has its advantages, but it also leads to complications when looking for a cast for a film that is going to be shot in Spain. In addition, Arturo gave us the condition that the role of Macarena had to be played by a Spanish actress. Assembling a cast within those restrictions was not the easiest thing to do. It is a cast that comes from ten different countries. The greatest contribution is made by Spain, but looking for Spanish actors who speak English fluently is not easy».

Asked about the choice of Amaia Salamanca in the role of Macarena, the Colombian director stressed that «Amaia is a magnificent actress. It is a pleasure working with her. She has great discipline and brings things to the project. Besides, she had to be someone very pretty. Her English is very good too, so it's been great having her. But we not only have her, we have also had other great actors such as Simon Andreu, Jorge Sanz, Unax Ugalde, Carlos Cuevas and Rodolfo Sancho. There is also Alicia Borrachero, who plays an extraordinary role that we are going to remember among many others she has done throughout her career. There are also the English Richard Armitage, Paul Freeman and Will Keen and the Irish Fionnula Flanagan, who you know here as 'The Others'. We also have Franco Nero, a notable actor from the spaghetti western and from other times. There are also Polish, German, Colombian and North American actors. That represented working with a certain harmony so that each one did not feel that he was working with different accents».

This director assures that «in Seville we have had the best filming in history. It is a great pleasure to shoot here for many reasons. First, and as many times Arturo himself has repeated, because the city is the main character. The teams, the atmosphere, the people and the ease with which you work in Seville is extraordinary. I don't think that such favorable conditions can be achieved in any other city".

In Seville, the team of 'La piel del tambor' was filming for six weeks and, as this director says, «we had all the space and all the facilities. We have obtained support from the City Council to the other administrations and estates». «I would like this film to serve as a worldwide promotion of Seville because it has been a very generous city during filming and deserves all kinds of promotion, which on the other hand does not need it because Seville is Seville. Hopefully we contribute to show other aspects of the city that are not the cliches», he underlines.

Regarding the love-hate relationship that Arturo Perez-Reverte has maintained with the adaptations that have been made of his novels both to the world of cinema and television, Sergio Dow says that «Arturo has seen the film and has responded in a very enthusiastic. He has stated that the movie mirrors his novel and has stated this several times on his Twitter. In addition, he has written a prologue for a book that the Sevillian publisher Samarcanda is doing about the film and in which he considers it in the most favorable terms, saying that it is a great film. Now that the premiere is approaching, all these things are going to be disclosed more. He is being very generous and that makes up for the many difficulties and sacrifices that go into putting together a film".

Sergio Dow insists that one of the things he has respected the most in Arturo Perez-Reverte's novel is the dialogues «as far as possible, and those I have had to contribute I have tried to be written in a similar way, respecting each one of them, of the voices of the characters. In that Arturo is extraordinary and unbeatable».
Apart from the fact that the film can be seen in movie theaters and at different film festivals, Amazon Prime has already bought the rights. «The intention is that the film be sold and that it reaches all countries. Do not forget that the novel has been translated into thirty-two languages in fifty countries. In other words, millions of copies have been sold and legions of people follow this novel and others that Arturo writes. In addition, Alfaguara has already announced that it is going to make a special reprint of the book for the movie. That will arouse a special interest in the novel and those who have already read it, hopefully recognize it in the film. The good thing is that Arturo recognizes his novel in the film with in the limitations that an adaptation has».

How could it be otherwise, next Thursday, October 13, the premiere of 'The skin of the drum in Seville' will take place. Specifically, it will be at the Odeon Plaza de Armas cinema. The event will be attended by Amaia Salamanca, Alicia Borrachero, Rodolfo Sancho, Arturo Perez-Reverte and Sergio Dow himself.

Dow also says that he would like to make more films inspired by the Perez-Reverte universe. "I wouldn't rule out making a kind of sequel based on the same character as this novel. Let's see if the film is well received. Regarding Perez-Reverte's previous adaptations, this director admits that «I find merit in all of them, from the one made by Polanski ('The Novena Gate') to the one by Pedro Olea ('The Fencing Master'), including Imanol Uribe ('The spherical chart'). I find merit in all of them. What happens is that making a perfect adaptation is very difficult because it is a translation, and in that there always has to be some kind of concession. What I proposed was to respect as much as possible the spirit of the novel».
