Если посмотреть в тексте "Хоббита", то буквально для приказа там вполне четко употребляется слово
order, а
bid, даже в значении, близком к "приказать", имеет специфический смысловой оттенок, который я бы навскидку определила как сплав "настойчиво просить, имея на то право" и "побуждать", а по-русски, наверное, передала бы через слово "пусть" ("пусть Х сделает то-то и то-то"). Такой вариант, безусловно, тоже может задеть самолюбие, но это всё же не приказ. Более того, учитывая, что Торин позднее отвечает тем же
bid, можно предположить, что это вообще глагол, предписанный протоколом (хотя, признаю, с тем же успехом может быть и отзеркаливанием - маловато данных для однозначного утверждения).
